HWHTW in the News! @bethmonster @HealthyLiving @USNC_UNWomen #hwhtw

Here at HWHTW, I usually like to write about the news, not appear in it.  But when the delightful Elizabeth Kuster of the Huffington Post asked to interview me about the trip I took to India last summer, I couldn’t say no.  (Especially since it’s for the HuffPost’s “Becoming Fearless” series – flattery will get you everywhere!)  You can read the interview here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/07/grad-student-risks-3500_n_1491711.html?ref=healthy-living

Also, I’m delighted to be a new member of the US National Committee for UN Women’s Board of Directors!  Join us for our Annual Meeting in DC on June 2nd – get all the details here: Save the Date: USNC-UN Women 2012 Annual Meeting

Global Marketplace at the NMWA, May 12-13 @WomenInTheArts #hwhtw #dc @dcculture #passportdc

What better way to celebrate Mother’s Day than by supporting women artisans from all over the world at the National Museum of Women in the Arts?

“The Global Marketplace features jewelry, ceramics, personal accessories, and home decor created by women artisan groups living in emerging economies throughout the world. Exhibitors representing the craftswomen will also discuss the arts as a powerful vehicle of economic development.

“Celebrating its 25th anniversary, NMWA hosts its third annual Global Marketplace in conjunction with Passport DC.

“The Global Marketplace is part of NMWA’s Empowering Women through Art initiative, and proceeds from the two-day event go directly to the women artisans. Countries represented include: Cambodia, Ethiopia, Laos, Mexico, Peru, Swaziland, Turkey, Vietnam among others.”

Be the Change: Support the Walk to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls @USNC_UNWomen

The UN Women US National Committee is hosting annual Walk to End Violence Against Women and Girls events across the country this spring!

If you’re in the D.C. area, join the National Capital Chapter’s walk on Saturday, April 28th: http://www.unwomen-usnc.org/natcapital/calendarofevents

To make a donation in support of the walk, click here: http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/allison-asplin/2012nationalcapitalwalk

To learn about walks in other cities, click here: http://www.unwomen-usnc.org/walks

From USNC:

“Why are we walking? — Violence against women and girls is a worldwide pandemic; — up to 70% of women experience physical or sexual violence from men in their lifetime; — among women aged 15 to 44, acts of violence cause more death and disability than cancer, malaria, traffic accidents and war combined; — the cost of intimate partner violence in the U.S. exceeds $5.8 billion per year; — 102 countries have no specific legal provisions against domestic violence.

This Trust Fund is the only global multilateral grant-making mechanism exclusively devoted to supporting local, national and regional efforts of organizations to combat gender-based violence. Since it began operations in 1997, the Trust Fund has awarded more than US$19 million to 263 initiatives to address violence against women in 115 countries. UN Women administers the Trust Fund.”

New “Voices of Women” Class at American University, May 7-23! @HannaRosin #hwhtw

When I first met Hanna Rosin, she had just finished telling the TEDWomen audience that “Men are the new ball and chain.”  My post about that talk (and her famous article in the Atlantic Monthly entitled “The End of Men”) was the most-viewed post on this blog in 2011!  There’s no doubt that Hanna knows how to keep things interesting.

Now, she’s taking her talents to the classroom.  This May, Hanna will be  teaching a 3-week class on “Voices of Women” along with American University professor Iris Krasnow.  Knowing Hanna, there won’t be a dull moment…
