Reporting LIVE from Indian Ambassador Shankar’s Discussion of the U.S. – India Relationship

Tonight the Women’s Foreign Policy Group hosted a discussion at the Indian Ambassador’s Residence on the U.S. – India relationship. Indian Ambassador Meera Shankar presented on recent expansions of cooperation between the two countries in the areas of technology, security, and trade. Afterward, I asked Ambassador Shankar about women’s role in the U.S. – India relationship. She replied that the two countries have recently established a formal women’s dialogue, similar to the technology-focused initiative. She also described some new women-centric political reforms in India. For example, she cited a new rule requiring 30% representation of women in local/municipal governing bodies, giving 100 million women influence over the decisions made in their villages.
